Computer music came into being from musical research using new digital technology. The author presents major innovations from both directions in computer music: musical assisted composition and sound production. After this first part, he discusses issues pertaining to interfaces and musical representation, where musical research has taken place and the role of real-time digital processes from the 1980s. To conclude, he introduces relevant communities (e.g., ICMA) and the important journals.
