François Bayle begins by discussing the sonic characteristics of recorded sound to elaborate a definition of acousmatic. This definition specifies the border between sound and time, the different modalities of acousmatic (Acousmonium, Acousmathèque and Acousmographe), the role of the sound image and its difference with the more general term, electroacoustic music. After this first part, Bayle defines the relationships between material and image (influenced by Charles Sanders Peirce and René Thom), perception and signification.
