First, Barry Truax compares granular synthesis to frequency modulation synthesis (the dominant model of synthesis at the time). He explains how granular synthesis permits the user to create sounds and structures simultaneously (contrary to FM synthesis) and to elaborate new compositional instruments as well as a rich musical discourse. After this introduction, he describes various compositional strategies and analyses extracts from his musical works using granular synthesis: Riverrun (1986), The Wings of Nike (1987), Tongues of Angels (1988), Beauty and The Beast (1989), Song of Songs (1992), Pacific (1990), Dominion (1991) and Basilica (1992).
