In 1984, Benedict Mailliard proposed the “Germinal” project to 14 composers at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales. Each composer worked with a different ‘germ-cell’ sound extract in the GRM’s new 123 computer music studio. They used the same four phase compositional plan (recording, sound transformation, editing, mixing). Only editing and mixing were realised in the analog studio. The author analyses and compares the musical strategies of each composer. To conclude, he introduces the concept of singularity.
