The Hand in the Web: An Interview with Michel Waisvisz

This article presents an interview with Michel Waisvisz, a developer of several live interactive instrument performance systems. He reflects on his dual role as composer and inventor and the differences between human controlled and computer controlled performance. He also discusses his experiences with ‘The Hands’ system, a novel performance interface based on hand-mounted sensors that he designed, and his new system, ‘The Web’ (1989) which was his first attempt to create a simple instrument to manipulate timbre.
