Screen-Based Musical Interfaces as Semiotic Machines

Thursday 27 July 2006, by Rob Weale

In this paper, the author discusses the theoretical background that underlies the design of the ixi software system, a series of fifteen screen-based virtual interfaces for musical performance on computers. Likening the design of such interfaces to that of creating a semiotic system, the author presents the terminology of ixi’s semantics - a language that suggests to the musician what the functionality of each interface element is, and what it signifies in a musical context.
