Electro-Acoustic Music in the University: A New Paradox

In this article, the author reflects on the general trend in electroacoustic music study at university (ca. 1984), namely that this relatively new area of study has not been flourishing at many institutions. He argues that one of the reasons for this may be a failure by music schools to accept that a wealth of significant, original and engaging electroacoustic music does exists outside of the university domain. The electroacoustic music that many students want to hear and emulate belongs to a class of music outside the institution’s normal activities. The author suggests that institutions should provide a more realistic and culturally relevant approach to appreciation and training in electroacoustic music.
