In this article, the author investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) techniques could be used to expand the knowledge base and enrich the behaviour of musically intelligent systems. He offers a brief history of AI in music and discusses the application AI techniques in four areas of music research: composition, performance, theory, and digital sound processing (DSP).
