Mixed music appears to be a new musical genre, a sort of “close encounter of the third kind” which brings together the note and the sound - an approach that raises several issues:
- Within this potential homogeneity, there exist many aesthetic divergences.
- There are conflicts between notation driven composition and sound driven composition.
- There are conflicts between the durability of tape-based works and the obsolescence of real-time works.

This paper offers a complete analysis of the mixed music genre. The author exemplifies his ideas with numerous works. A list of one hundred important mixed works completes the paper.
