Stria de John Chowning ou l’oxymoron musical: du nombre d’or comme poétique

2005a

John Chowning, Portraits Polychromes. Paris: INA-GRM/CDMC: 87-115.

Stria was composed by John Chowning in 1977 at Stanford University and was mixed at IRCAM for its première at the Paris concert series, “Perspectives du XXe siècle”. This piece is constructed with the golden section. Bruno Bossis analyses the use of it in terms of frequency modulation synthesis, structure, pitch, and also investigates the notion of parent/child sounds. He then studies the work’s scales, its score and how Chowning approaches the notion of composed space.
